"Thursday June 1, 7:03 PM - More LibertySurf/X-Stream News supplied by a user of this page - Thanks again to A.M.

Latest victim of unprecedented demand for unmetered Net access in the UK LibertySurf has suspended sales of its unmetered Internet service following network and helpline congestion."

See http://uk.news.yahoo.com/000601/22/a91pd.html

On same day 1-Jun-2000 The Times carried a one page advert for LibertySurf. At 9,30pm after 40 attempts to access a line, which was always busy, I gave up. Sometimes, after many busy tries you may connect only to get "Start authentication/Authenticating/Disconnect" or "invalid user name or password". This can often be misleading as it is often the overloaded LibertySurf server failing not your log-on being incorrect.

More news dated 8-May-2000.... "AXS Telecom recently became a member of the LibertySurf Group. France's premier FREE ISP and soon to become a household name over here." (Hopefully for the right reasons!). AXS give 24hr 2p/min phone in UK and good rates abroad however they too were giving a line busy response as at the end of May during some evenings. www.axstel.com

30th May 2000 - I am getting very useful information in about the X-Stream/LibertySurf service - here is some of it reproduced from the front page

LibertySurf. A new ISP offering FREE 0800 Internet Access - LibertySurf.Co.UK. LibertySurf is offering umetered 24/7 access for £35pa, or off-peak for £20. The offer is through Comet and MVC stores.
I believe this may be the same company as X-Stream.Co.UK.

Recived some further information from a user of this page - Thank you.

Dear John,

re libertysurf 24/7 is not £35 it is only available after paying £20 for Off peak then you can upgrade for a further £35, making it £55 total. also there is a really annoying advert bar at the top of the screen which really slows things down.

And from another user -- Thanks again.

LibertySurf - we signed up yesterday and works okay. Techy help worked well almost straight to a human. Its pay £20 for CD then maybe later ANOTHER £35 for off-peak access. (£55 is a lot of OneTelNet pennies!) It puts up irritating animated advertising banners 3 lines down at top of screen about 5% of screen height which wasn't expected.

Outllook Express and Internet Explorer are both pushed down by approx 1cm and persist like this even after disconnection to LibertySurf. Technical Help recommend turning PC off and on to re-instate programs at top of the screen (not tried yet!)

Sign up was quite easy no credit card wanted. You don't see the terms & conditions until you run approx 3 screens into the CD having bought the CD. Six hour connect time beats the IC24 one hour. Peak time is as BT define it thankfully. Some services seem to be being developed still for launching at the end of the May 2000.

Your suspicion about LibertySurf being connected with X-Stream seems valid. The adverts put onto hard-disk by LibertySurf have got filenames like netgads.x-stream.co.uk.ads.amazon.new.newbestsellers1.gif & HTML indexes refer to netgads.x-stream.co.uk

27th May 2000 - World Online the parent company to the Stray Duck ISP are offering a FREE 0800 Internet Access deal that looks good value for money. It costs £14.99 a month and includes 24/7 0800 access to the Internet as well as reductions to all voice calls compared to the BT tariff. Details at the Stray Duck 0800 ISP site.

22nd May 2000 - Have added Virgin Net to the main page as they are running a 24/7 FREE 0800 Internet Access trial. - Selected subscribers only though you can register your interest at the Virgin Net 0800 ISP site.

15th May 2000 - News of a new ISP offering FREE 0800 Internet Access received today - LibertySurf.Co.UK. LibertySurf is offering umetered 24/7 access for £35pa, or off-peak for £20.
The offer is through Comet and MVC stores.
I believe this may be the same company as X-Stream.Co.UK. I will post additional information here when I find out.

6th May 2000 - Got a reply to Mr. P's opinion about the FREE 0800 Internet market in the UK, from a user who is a bit more satisfied with the service he has found, click here to read it.

1st May 2000 - received details of Excite's FREE 0800 Internet Access service, added near the bottom of the main page.

Visual Depth (1st May 2000) are having problems with their system being swamped by users, 350,000. Will be some delay to launch of 0800 service.

Received an email from a reader of the page (29th April 2000) and have posted it here. Someone who is NOT happy with the current 0800 ISP market.

Email received today (28th April 2000) from Visual Depth who are now accepting customers to their 24/7 0800 Internet Access Service. Subscription is only £74.99 per year, subject to a £24.99 set up fee. Additionally you may fax your details to Visual Depth on 08707 415 125.

Note: I have disabled the RedHotAnt links - thanks to everyone who let me know that this service had shut down.

News of two other Free 0800 Intenernet Access Providers today (24th April 2000). RedHotAnt.Com and NTL.

A user of this page gave me the info. on RedHotAnt and is reporting that they offer a very good service with support for ISDN and full 0800 access. Read an extract from his email here.

If anyone else would like to send me a review of the ISP they are using I will try to include it in a similar way.

NTL are now offering 0800 Internet access, if your are an ntl phone customer it's free, if you're a BT customer you have to plug a dialer into your phone line and spend £10 per month on calls. NTL free internet access only works for ntl specific customers and not customers coming from cable and wireless. http://www.ntlworld.com/signup/freeinternet.htm

I have it on good authority that NTL's free Internet access via NTLWorld is to end sometime in early 2001, when they will start charging all their customers 1p per minute. Another FREE 0800 ISP added to the page today (16th April 2000) 4UNET. Details down the page. This is the company that has been advertising on the television this weekend.

News of two other FREE 0800 ISPs added today, (15th April 2000) LineOne and SurfSaver, details further down the page. - Thanks to everyone who sends me info.

Things are really hotting up on the FREE 0800 Internet Access Front - today (12th April 2000) I have received news of another big name ISP providing 0800 Access. MadAsaFish. They are part of iomart group plc which also owns a telephone service. They have some details on a new 0800 access but nothing out yet.

Also I had a reply to an email I sent from Alta-Vista UK which is enlightening to say the least.

=================email extract follows (11/4/2000)===============
Thank you for your correspondence. At present there are no further details of the AltaVista Internet Access service to pass on and no launch date has been announced. As soon as more information becomes available we shall send you details.
=================email extract ends (11/4/2000)==================

Makes you wonder what all the fuss was about in the media eh? .... :-)....... There are more details on the Alta Vista service lower down the page.

News of another company offering FREE 0800 Internet Access arrived in my email today (09th April 2000) - Visual Depth are launching a 0800 Access ISP, See http://216.149.185.233 They are taking registrations for notification by email when the business launches. One of the positive features of the proposed service is that there will be no cut off time! I will update this info. as soon as I receive further details.
